Board of Governors Vote

Colleagues,

Last week, we learned that the PASSHE Board of Governors wanted to meet with the APSCUF-KU leadership to discuss the vote of no confidence. According to Pat Heilman, such a meeting was unprecedented. It marked an opportunity to discuss faculty concerns in a candid and professional manner. As late as Monday, we were very hopeful about a potential resolution to the many problems we face here at Kutztown.

Unfortunately, the meeting never happened.

Yesterday, during a conference call, the PASSHE Board of Governors unanimously passed a resolution that:

“President F. Javier Cevallos continues to demonstrate strong leadership in his development of Kutztown University, its faculty and academic programs to ensure student success…”

Pat Heilman, who was present at the meeting, provided a full text of the resolution. It is attached. A portion of the resolution is also included on the PASSHE website.

Like the Board of Trustees, the Board of Governors has closed ranks. Rather than acknowledge the systemic problems that we have raised, they have chosen to attribute them to a small group of dissidents within the union leadership.

The votes at Representative Council two weeks ago belie that notion. We are not isolated, nor are we small in numbers. We do not lack support.

Last week, Kutztown students started a Facebook site called “Kutztown University Needs to Change” to address their own particular concerns. As of this writing, it has 1,129 members. A student town hall meeting is planned for next Monday so that faculty and students can talk.

We are not isolated. We do not lack support.

Why?

Clever manipulation? A campaign of “shock and awe,” as my one colleagues has suggested?

Or, is it the simple proposition that people understand the need to face facts and fix things? That or the vacuum offered by management from top to bottom.

Think about it.

And vote.

Not only do I have absolutely no confidence in President Cevallos. But possibly a more pressing issue, I have no confidence in campus security. Did you know that our officers do not have to take a physiological examinations to work at KU. Nor are they given drug screening. They take no written standardized tests either for employment here. That's get serious these guys carry guns and are charges with protecting us. I don't ever remember a successful prosecution of a campus rape either. I'm not exactly for shared governance but I appeal to the faculty on behalf of campus safety and security to assist the campus community with this issue.

They are police officers. This means that they had to go through some sort of police schooling smf continued training. get serious here. they don't just give anyone a badge and a gun... they are a real police unit. and if the offense is serious enough, and rape surely is, the district attorney will present it? maybe? you are misinformed and just sound, in my opinion, silly and naive.

It is silly that they would get it so wrong at KU that's for sure. They have all gone through the police academy this is true. So have many people who have been turned down for hire at other law enforcement agencies. For reasons, like failing entrance exams, (KU has no written testing for their officers), failing drug screening, (KU has none), failing physiological examinations, (KU has none). See things have change in regards to campus law enforcement, like now they carry guns, there is more real crime. But the standards have not changed. Sadly I am right about public safety.

If its true its another example of failed leadership. I for one want the officers to be able to present a winable case to the DA. We have had quite a few rapes reported over the last several years.....KU has changed and security is just another area where he have lagged behind.

APSCUF-KU,

I don't think that you have any idea how the whole joining groups on facebook works. People will join groups just because its the thing to do. Many people will accept an invitation with out really knowing what a group is about. Many people accept friends with out knowing who the person is. Thats how facebook works. APSCUF-KU seems to be gloating about how many people are in the KU needs a change group. Give me a break. Take a look at what groups are out there. I just looked at a couple groups titled: "We Pay the Professors' Salaries, So Why Do they Think their Sh*t Don't Stink?", "Ability to Teach Should be a Requirement for College Professors", and "Professors procrastinate more than students". Why don't you post those. The group "it's LANCASTER, not LANG-caster or LAND-caster" has 2,703 members. So, to me, it seems that there are more students at kutztown concerned with how lancaster is pronounced there how "kutztown needs a change". You all should be ashamed of APSCUF-KU.
